KRAKOW: ANOTHER ACCUSED INFORMER STEPS DOWN
°ü¸®ÀÚ

Krakow, Jan. 8, 2007 (CWNews.com) - Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz of Krakow has accepted the resignation of Msgr. Janusz Bielanski, the rector of the city¡¯s cathedral, who was accused of cooperation with the secret police during the Communist era.

Msgr. Bielanski, a seminary classmate of the cardinal¡¯s, was charged by a national publication with providing information to Communist agents. Specifically, the cathedral rector reportedly agreed to give government authorities the names of all those Catholics who requested that Mass be offered for the cause of the Polish nation.

The resignation of Msgr. Bielanski came the day after Archbishop Stanislaw Wielgus stepped down as head of the Warsaw archdiocese, after investigators concluded that the newly appointed archbishop, too, had been a Communist informer. Church leaders in Poland are bracing for a series of revelations about the past conduct of clerics.
