Á¦¸ñ : Legally forbidden official position of priest
Voice of the Wilderness
Despites the church law forbidding political activities and official positions, the number of priests¡¯ taken-up political or official positions is growing.

Such as, Father Song, Ki-in, chairman of Committee of Historical Distortion Settlement, and Father Ham, Se-woong, chairman of Peaceful Protest Culture Committee, are directly

offense to clause 3 article 285 of the Codex Iuris Canonici(Catholic church law)-"All priests should not involve any official position to exercise power to the people"- stipulating official position.

Of cause, they can excuse that those committees do not exercise power on the people. Actually, exercising power means that someone enforces the people to do or not to do something.

When the committee, that Father Song involves, judges that something went wrong in the past, then a bundle of orders based on this historical fact would be destroyed and if they condemn someone who was once a historical hero in the past, the bereaved family would be shamed.

Likewise the case of the deprivation of accorded privilege (of their former office by law) of former presidents Chun, Doo-hwan and Roh, Tae-woo, those committee may take some rights or advantages.

Who can say this is not exercising power or else!

Although main body of the power is not the committee, but the government, the government would have accepted the advice of committee and this became customized.

Nevertheless, if they say this is not exercising power and it is neither against the Codex Iuris Canonic (Catholic church law), it is unbelievable excuse of the priests who have to communicate with God by self-examination, meditation and prayers.
Who can deceive God what you bear in mind?

Fathers, do not use Opus Dei(work of God) for their own political aims!

How to deal with priests' political activity?

Is it right that the priests, who are in charge of Opus Dei(work of God), announce their political opinion during the sermons and urge the people to support specific political issue?

The believers, who come to church for listening to the God's message and want to save their souls, are confused with the priests' political opinion expression.

In spite of the fact that there is a number of people leaving church for this kind of discontentedness, the number of priests who are involving political activity is growing.

Father, Moon Gyu-hyun used Bu-an catholic church as headquarters of the counterforce to radioactivity waste storage construction.

To stop Saemangeum reclamation project, there was a demonstration march for three-step one worship event and it was televised.

Father, Moon Jeong-hyun, brother of Father Moon Gyu-hyun, stands on the first line in opposition to establishment of U.S.A. army headquarters in Pyeongtaek city.

And there is well known priests' political group, Catholic Priests' Association for Justice(CPAJ) as well.(Presumably, they could be under the hallucination conceiving themselves not political, but religious Opus Dei to make God's word practical in real world.)

They even made different view to the church which is officially against the Private School Reform Law by an announcement contradict to the church's and this occur more confusion among the believers.

They are on the contrary to church on Private Education Law, which was made an official view by church, and there are a lot more they speak up their voice on political issues.

Is the mission of priest to confuse believers and to inculcate their own opinion?

Who gave the authority to Fathers to revise worldly business?

What a father should do is reading mass, improving their divine virtue and discipline spirit in private, and Opus Dei(work of God).

Private spiritual discipline is meditating God's word, praying for self-examination to know what to do, serving church is leading believers' religious life within bible's teaching and holy spirit's guidance under the discipline of Catholic church.

Praying for self-meditation and self-examination is totally individual matter, but serving church, working with worldly things needs district self-restraint.

A priest in charge of church has to think about traditional church disciplines, the law and social rules, and when the priest is in charge of a church he has a lot of things to consider such as character of believers for each and so on.

Involving worldly things and teaching doctrine for doing this or not doing that is not something that priest can do easily even though the conclusion has come out after prayer and meditation.

Complying Holy Spirit's extra help, being humble and thinking carefully is Opus Dei (God's work).

The priest in charge of God's work (Opus Dei) should be prudence, careful of themselves and pray for holy spirit's special guiding when we remind the early days of Korean catholic church- let¡¯s think about how many died due to the prohibition of ancestral table serving which is allowing to all believers today.

Nevertheless, the priests either collectively or individually disturb Korean history, announce the refusal to the Korea and USA alliance for national security, stand against radioactivity waste storage construction and apply pressure the government to stop the Saemangeum reclamation project-already 90% completed- and more worse is that their enforcement is expended to the believers.

Nobody knows who gave the priests this kind of right to preach their own political opinion and the authority to enforce the believers to do something.

Even if 90% of believers and most of the public support the issue, it is unlikely to be considered right that the priest in Good's work goes with worldly issue.

Because God teaches us to care one lost sheep, but not the 99 well cared sheep.

It could be not so important that farm product selling and opening charity bazaar to sell secondhand clothes for offering new church construction, but this could damage the other believers who do the work for their life. None of us cares about this fact, but the priests should consider this.

Do the priests think churches their electoral districts?

It could be thought that the priest has same right as common people to do political activity in democratic republic of Korea, which allows people's freedom for political activity.

And it would not be able to prohibit the priest who chose political activity to practice his self-conscience.

However priest of a church who has received God's holy mission should not use their status to achieve the political ambition.

They can possibly join the political struggle as a citizen when they give up God's work, but it is greatly wrong that a priest preaches believers his personal political opinion that is against church.

A church is not an electoral district of a priest, because the priest is not elected by believers in the church to represent them. The status of a priest of church is only given for God's work following instruction of the church.

This might not be relevant example, but officers in the government service are also prohibited for political activity because their positions are for carte blanche given by the government.

Therefore, the priest, who has even more important mission than officers to preach God's word and to guide people to the gospel, should be careful of political activity.

The clause 3 article 285 of the Codex Iuris Canonici(Catholic church law) prohibiting priests¡¯ official positioning should be considered that this law bans the priest from involving worldly authority and politics.

Therefore, when the priest wants to change real world deciding after his own meditation and prayer, he should give up God's work the church and return to the general public to work for his own purpose.

Catholic bishops' conference or archbishops should not wait and see priests' association by reason of its voluntary organization, but they have missions to resolve misunderstanding of believers on this issue.

Those who do not obey to the command of church should be suspended God's work or confined for dispensary.

This will protect believers who just follow priests with blind faith.

Church should think carefully if the decision is to be regretted someday.

A few years ago, church issues a statement to regret and apology worshipping at shrine during Colonial Period. This might have happened because of the church policy involved worldly thing and this gives our church a lesson to rethink whether church¡¯s currently business is to be regretful in later day, what is more, the priests, confirmed bachelors, have less understandings on worldly things and its delicate issues. Therefore, being idealist is irresistible temptation to priests.

To control this lacked understandings and inclination toward idealist is quite difficult to deal with, but it is really something that the church should do.

The church should do what they have to even though these worldly things become more complex than early days of church. Therefore, the church should make a certain conclusion resulting from intensive debate before the announcement to public no matter it causes sacrifice.

At least, the church should not apology or regret to the public someday later.

Reviewing the Latin American liberation theology once dominated and Vietnam¡¯s defeat, their strong confrontation with the government resulted another dictatorial or anti-church government establishment. Those churches would issue statements to regret and apology to the public in someday.
